Since there are so many devices that require the use of USB ports on the computer, sometimes users run out of space. Printers, hard drives, flash drives, and every other gadget available for the computer seem to require that type of power source.

Typically, the most modern computers come with more than two USB ports. Laptop devices have them located on the side, while desktop computers provide them in the back of the hard drive. Expansions that are located in the front of the tower of a desktop computer now provide additional options as well. However, if the computer only has these ports in the back, users may want to invest in styles that attach to the front for convenience.

For computer users that are not afraid to explore their computers’ makeup, changing the case of the hard drive to allow for USB expansions may be an option. Users can order different “shells” for the tower that will provide ways for additional USB ports to be added. To do this, users should be sure that their computer is capable of handling extra ports, and if problems arise during installation, a professional should be seen to avoid damage to the computer itself.

Much like a power outlet extension, USB port extenders are also available. These simple and inexpensive gadgets plug into existing ports and contain four to eight USB openings. Basically, it gives the user the ability to plug additional devices in without spending a fortune. This works best for up-to-date computers with the ability to support the new attachments.
